AI in professional services statistics: key stats at a glance

  • 43.6% of professional services projects use AI in 2026, up from 23.1% in 2025 (SPI Research).

  • 84.8% of professional services firms say AI saves them time, but only 29.9% say it generates revenue (SPI Research, 2026).

  • Professional services firms using AI on more than 80% of projects deliver 90.7% of projects on time, vs 76.3% for firms using it on fewer than 20% (SPI Research, 2026).

  • Professional services firms running complex AI agents or an AI-first model report EBITDA of 20.5%, vs 13.3% for firms at the chat stage or with no formal AI use (SPI Research, 2026).

  • 36.8% of professional services firms don't formally track a single AI outcome (SPI Research, 2026).

AI is used on 43.6% of professional services projects in 2026, nearly double the 23.1% in 2025, according to SPI Research's 2026 Impact of AI on Professional Services study of 245 firms. But the payoff is uneven: 84.8% of firms say AI saves them time, while only 29.9% say it generates revenue.

The study covers management and IT consultancies, professional services teams inside software and SaaS companies, and other professional services firms across the Americas, EMEA and APac.

Teamwork.com co-sponsored this year's study, and our CRO, Mossy O'Mahony, wrote the foreword. The statistics below cover adoption, delivery, profit, pricing, data and governance. How AI in professional services changed from 2025 to 2026

AI use in professional services moved far faster than business results in 2026. The share of projects using AI nearly doubled, while EBITDA, project margin and utilization each rose by about two points or less.

AI adoption statistics in professional services

AI adoption in professional services nearly doubled in 2026, and only 4.1% of firms now make no formal use of AI.

  • 21.2% of professional services firms say AI agents run multi-step processes across their systems, and 7.2% describe an AI-first operating model.

  • The smallest firms use AI most in their own work. Firms with fewer than 10 employees use AI on 51.3% of projects, vs 38.0% for firms with more than 700.

  • The largest firms build AI into what they sell. 76.9% of firms with more than 700 employees offer a client-facing agentic AI product or service, vs 30.0% of the smallest firms.

  • Independent professional services firms use AI on 47.6% of projects, vs 33.8% for professional services teams inside technology companies.

What it means: Adoption is no longer the question. Leadership supports AI, most people can use it, and clients expect it. The open question is what AI is returning.

AI and project delivery statistics

On-time delivery is AI's clearest payoff in professional services. Firms using AI on more than 80% of projects deliver 90.7% of them on time, vs 76.3% for firms using it on fewer than 20%.

  • Professional services firms using AI on more than 80% of projects earn $207k in revenue per professional services employee, vs $155k for firms using it on fewer than 20%.

  • On-time delivery rises at every level of the SPI AI Maturity Model™, from 69.8% at Levels 1 and 2 to 92.5% at Level 5.

  • AI helps most with document-heavy work: 82.8% of firms agree it has improved how they create project deliverables. It helps least where clean operational data is needed. Only 10.7% say it has helped a lot or a great deal with demand planning, and 9.6% with rate analysis.

  • Project risk analysis showed the largest gain in delivery, with its score up 16% year over year (from 2.82 to 3.26 out of 5).

What it means: AI shows up in delivery first. Faster drafting, better status reporting and earlier risk flags reach the schedule before they reach the margin.

AI profitability statistics

AI pays off in profit mainly for the firms that go furthest with it. Those running complex agents or an AI-first model report 20.5% EBITDA, vs 13.3% for firms at the chat stage or with no formal AI use.

EBITDA rises with the stage of AI adoption; utilization doesn't. Source: SPI Research, 2026 Impact of AI on Professional Services.EBITDA rises with the stage of AI adoption; utilization doesn't. Source: SPI Research, 2026 Impact of AI on Professional Services.

  • The same firms bill day rates of $1,364, vs $962, and grew professional services revenue 8.8%, vs 3.1%.

  • 17.6% of professional services firms that reported EBITDA earn 30% or more. These high performers average 40.6% EBITDA, vs 11.4% for the rest.

  • Firms selling AI services report almost the same EBITDA as firms that don't (17.3% vs 16.6%), and SPI doesn't consider the gap reliable.

  • The small group at Level 5 of the SPI AI Maturity Model™ (5.4% of firms) reports 28.3% EBITDA.

SPI notes that its data doesn't prove AI agents cause higher profit; better-run firms may simply adopt AI faster. But the profit gap holds after SPI allows for firm size and type.

What it means: How far a firm goes with AI predicts profit far better than how many projects use it, or whether it sells AI services.

The AI revenue gap: time saved vs revenue earned

Most professional services firms save time with AI but don't yet earn more from it. 84.8% report time savings, but only 29.9% report revenue gains.

  • Professional services firms reporting that AI significantly increased productivity achieved 85.9% of their revenue target, vs 93.5% for firms reporting no change.

  • Average billable utilization is 67.8%, below SPI's 75% target. It doesn't rise with AI use: it ranges from 66.6% to 68.9% whatever share of projects use AI.

  • For a 100-person professional services organization, every 10% of time-and-materials effort AI removes puts about $1.9mm of revenue a year at risk, unless the work is repriced or the hours are sold again.

  • Professional services firms expect 51.7% of their revenue to come from AI-related initiatives within three years, up from 24.1% today.

What it means: On hourly work, a saved hour leaves the invoice. Unless firms resell freed capacity or change how they price, part of AI's gain goes to the client. Mossy O'Mahony sets out how to plug that leak, and our piece on AI ROI in professional services looks at why that capacity isn't converting to margin.

AI and PSA software statistics

Firms on a commercial PSA are further along with AI. Only 17.7% are still at the chat stage or have no formal AI use, vs 44.4% of firms without one, though firms without a PSA are also much smaller (a median of 5 employees vs 65).

  • 58.8% of professional services firms use a commercial PSA, and 29.2% have no PSA at all.

  • PSA users run more AI governance controls: 3.7 of SPI's six, vs 2.6 for firms without a PSA.

  • Firms rate AI's impact on PSA performance at 2.57 out of 5, up from 2.10 in 2025.

What it means: SPI expects the next wave of AI value to come when AI can use the data in PSA, CRM and financial systems, not just the documents on a consultant's laptop.

Frequently asked questions

How many professional services firms use AI?

Almost all of them: only 4.1% of professional services firms make no formal use of AI, and AI is used on 43.6% of projects (SPI Research, 2026). That's up from 23.1% of projects in 2025.

Is AI improving profitability in professional services?

For the firms that go furthest with it, yes. Professional services firms running complex AI agents or an AI-first model report EBITDA of 20.5%, vs 13.3% for firms at the chat stage or with no formal AI use. For most firms, though, the time AI saves isn't yet showing up as revenue.

Why isn't AI increasing utilization?

Saved time only raises utilization when it's resold as billable work. In SPI Research's 2026 data, utilization stays between 66.6% and 68.9% whatever share of projects use AI, and only 19.1% of firms track AI's impact on utilization.

How much revenue is at risk when AI speeds up hourly work?

About $1.9mm a year for a 100-person professional services firm, for every 10% of time-and-materials effort AI removes, unless the work is repriced or the hours are resold (SPI Research, 2026).

What percentage of professional services firms track AI ROI?

36.8% of professional services firms don't formally track a single AI outcome (SPI Research, 2026). Firms that track three or more report EBITDA of 18.7%, vs 14.0% for firms that track none.

What is the SPI AI Maturity Model?

The SPI AI Maturity Model™ is a five-level framework from SPI Research that scores professional services firms on seven measures, including AI adoption stage, data readiness, employee proficiency and AI outcomes tracked. In 2026, 48.4% of firms sit at Level 3 and only 5.4% have reached Level 5.

Do professional services firms need a PSA to use AI?

Not to start, but it matters for going further. Only 17.7% of firms with a commercial PSA are still at the chat stage or have no formal AI use, vs 44.4% of firms without a PSA. Firms without a PSA also tend to be much smaller.
