Back in November 2012 we added the ability to respond to email notifications on Tasks and Milestones to complete or reopen the items. It’s a great way to complete/reopen items when you’re on the move and only have access to email.

To recap, you simply reply to the email notification with #done or #reopen and the task/milestone will be either completed or re-opened. You can even add a comment at the same time.

Example:

#done
I’ve completed this task and committed the changes

This will mark the task complete and also add a new comment on the task. The comment will contain the text “I’ve completed this task and committed the changes.”

This month we’ve expanded on this functionality so you can reassign tasks by email.

When you receive a task notification email you can simply reply with the following:

#assign @dan @sam @peter

This will reassign all “mentioned” users to the task. You can even add a comment at the same time, as with #done or #reopen.

Example:

#assign @peter @donal
I’ve reassigned this to Peter and Donal as they are better suited to fixing this issue

This will reassign the task to Peter and Donal and also add a new comment on the task. The comment will be “I’ve reassigned this to Peter and Donal as they are better suited to fixing this issue.”

Recap on how “mentions” work

When you “mention” a person or number of people, we try and work out the person you are referring to using their first name, last name and user login.

My name is Daniel Mackey (with a user login of dmackey), so the following could be used as a mention:

  • @daniel
  • @dan
  • @danielmack
  • @danielmackey
  • @dmackey
