This afternoon at 6.00pm GMT, something very special is happening.
Irish man Philip Cavanagh, along with his crew Darren, Barry and Dan of Team Battleborn will attempt to become the first Irishman to row non-stop across the Pacific in the world’s most gruelling endurance event – The Great Pacific Race.
Starting in California, the team will row in shift patterns of 2 hours on 2 hours off until they reach Hawaii, over 2100 nautical miles away. Expected to take around 5 weeks, the aim is for the boat to keep moving from the second they leave California until they touch down in Hawaii. To give you an idea of just how tough a challenge the team faces, more people have been to the moon than have successfully completed this run!
The team are aiming for the fastest crossing across the Pacific Ocean; with over 30 teams entering the competition, this will be tough as a lot of crews have the same goal in mind. The ocean rowing boat will contain everything they need for the trip, ranging from vacuum packed dry food, a water maker, navigation equipment, and daily karaoke sessions (courtesy of Philip!)
The team have undergone a gruelling and very intensive training schedule, which included a minimum of 12 training sessions a week. They have also had to build up as much body weight as possible as they will lose 25% of their weight on the crossing. Not only does this challenge of a lifetime entail weeks of continuous rowing, the team has also had to prepare for the possible obstacles that may come across along the way, including shark attacks, torrential weather, illness, sea sickness, tiredness, sleep deprivation, changing temperatures, and possible hurricanes.
